Quick answer
Google Ads has no minimum spend in South Africa. You pay per click, and Cape Town prices range from about R6 a click for "guest house cape town" to about R51 for "plumber cape town" and R61 for "pest control cape town". Google adds 15% VAT on top. Most local service businesses need R2,500 to R5,000 a month before VAT to get enough clicks to judge whether the ads work.
It's a Tuesday in November. You set R5,000 aside for Google Ads, and by Thursday a third of it has gone, faster than a parking spot at Clifton 4th in December. The dashboard shows 31 clicks. Your phone shows 2 missed calls and a WhatsApp from someone in Sandton asking if you service Durbanville.
That week is how most Cape Town owners meet Google Ads, and it's why so many decide "ads don't work". Usually the ads did their job. What went wrong was the budget, the targeting or what happened after the click.
This guide uses Google's own Keyword Planner prices for Cape Town searches, pulled in September 2026, plus Google's published rules on VAT and budgets. Click prices are estimates that change daily, so treat every rand figure here as a starting point for your own account, not a quote.
How much does Google Ads cost per click in Cape Town?
Between about R6 and R61 a click for the searches below. Emergency trades sit at the top, because one job is worth a lot. Accommodation searches are cheap per click, because so many people browse before they book.
These are Google's figures for searches made in South Africa. Google reports them in US dollars, so we've converted at R16.50, roughly where the rand traded in October 2026.
| Search | Searches a month (SA) | Average cost per click | Top-of-page bid range |
|---|---|---|---|
| pest control cape town | 1,300 | R61 | R18 to R62 |
| electrician cape town | 1,000 | R52 | R19 to R76 |
| plumber cape town | 2,400 | R51 | R22 to R80 |
| web design cape town | 720 | R40 | R20 to R56 |
| attorney cape town | 1,900 | R35 | R13 to R52 |
| estate agents cape town | 720 | R25 | R3 to R23 |
| dentist cape town | 2,400 | R23 | R7 to R25 |
| accommodation cape town | 6,600 | R15 | R4 to R19 |
| guest house cape town | 6,600 | R6 | R2 to R7 |
Google Ads Keyword Planner data for South Africa, September 2026, via DataForSEO. Converted at R16.50 to the US dollar and rounded. The average is what advertisers actually paid, while the range is Google's estimate of what it takes to show at the top of the page, so the 2 don't always line up.
You only pay when someone clicks. If your ad shows 500 times and nobody taps it, it costs you nothing. Google's auction also weighs how relevant your ad and landing page are, so a sharp ad that leads to a page about exactly that service can pay less per click than a vague one bidding more.
Is there a minimum budget for Google Ads in South Africa?
No. Google sets no minimum. You pick an average daily budget, and you can lower it or pause the campaign whenever you like.
The practical minimum is about data. With 10 clicks a month you can't tell a bad ad from a bad week. Aim for at least 50 to 100 clicks a month on your main service. At trade prices of around R51 a click, that's roughly R2,500 to R5,000 a month before VAT. For a guesthouse paying R6 a click, R1,000 already buys about 165 clicks.
If that number makes you wince, start narrower rather than smaller: 1 service, the suburbs you actually drive to, and only the hours someone can answer the phone.
Does Google charge VAT on ads in South Africa?
Yes. Every South African Google Ads account pays VAT at the South African rate, currently 15%, as required since 1 April 2019.
Your budget in Google Ads is before VAT, so a R5,000 month lands on your card as R5,750. Card-billed accounts see VAT added as they're charged. On monthly invoicing, Google adds it at the end of each month. If you're VAT-registered, add your VAT number under Billing, then Settings, so the invoice works for your claim.
Pick the rand when you create the account. The billing currency can't be changed later, and an account set up in US dollars by a well-meaning nephew leaves you exposed to every swing in the exchange rate.
Why did Google Ads spend more than my daily budget?
Because it's allowed to. On a busy day Google can spend up to 2 times your average daily budget, but over a calendar month it won't charge more than 30.4 times that daily figure.
Google treats your daily budget as an average. It spends more on days when more people search and less on quiet days. If it ever serves more ads than the monthly limit allows, Google absorbs that cost rather than billing you for it. Since 1 June 2026, campaigns that only run on certain days or hours also pace towards that full monthly limit.
Spending limits from Google Ads Help, "About spending limits" and "About average daily budgets". VAT from Google Ads Help, "Taxes in your country".
What does R5,000 a month on Google Ads get a Cape Town plumber?
About 98 clicks. If 1 in 10 of those people phones or sends a WhatsApp, that's roughly 10 enquiries, at about R575 each once VAT is included.
Click price from Google Keyword Planner, September 2026. The 1-in-10 enquiry rate is an illustration, not a benchmark. Track your own from the first month.
Whether R575 is cheap depends on the job. If an average call-out plus repair is worth R2,500 and you win half the enquiries you answer, the month pays for itself several times over. The figure that quietly decides your result is the last row: every unanswered call is a click you paid for and handed to the next plumber on the page.
What do Google Ads cost a Cape Town guesthouse?
Clicks are cheap, at about R6 for "guest house cape town" and R15 for "accommodation cape town", but you're bidding against Booking.com and Airbnb, and many of those people are still browsing.
R3,000 a month at R6 a click buys about 500 visits. The trap is sending them to a home page with no prices and no booking button. Send them straight to a page where they can check dates and book directly, or that click turns into a guest who books you on Booking.com and costs you commission as well.
If you target overseas travellers, check the jurisdiction surcharges. Google adds a 2% fee to ads served in the United Kingdom and 5% in Austria, and France and Italy move to 3% from 1 January 2027. A guesthouse targeting UK travellers in January pays that on top of the click price and the VAT.
Our guide to Booking.com versus direct bookings shows what commission costs over a year, and the direct booking calculator turns your own numbers into a rand figure.
Do Google Ads help my organic ranking?
No. Google says it doesn't accept payment to rank pages higher in its organic results. Ads and the free listings run separately.
This is the rumour we hear most often, usually as "run ads for a few months and Google will start ranking you". Switch the ads off and your paid visibility switches off with them. The free results and the map pack depend on your website, your reviews and your Google Business Profile.
That's why the businesses that do best with ads usually treat them as a tap they can open in a quiet month, with SEO building the free traffic underneath. Our Google Business Profile guide covers the free side, and the Brooklyn plumbing case study shows a plumber cutting $6,200 a month in ad spend once organic calls grew from 14 to 43 a week.
Where do Cape Town businesses waste money on Google Ads?
The same 4 settings come up in almost every account we audit, and each one is quick to fix.
- 1
Location left on "presence or interest"
That default setting can show your ads to people who are merely interested in Cape Town, like someone in Sandton daydreaming about a Camps Bay holiday. For a trade, choose people who are in or regularly in your area.
- 2
Broad keywords with no negatives
"Plumber" on its own can match "plumber salary" and "plumber course". Add negative keywords such as jobs, salary, course and free in week 1, then keep adding from the search terms report.
- 3
Ads running while nobody answers
Use an ad schedule to show call ads only when someone can pick up, or make sure every after-hours enquiry gets an instant reply that books the job.
- 4
No conversion tracking
If Google can't see which clicks became calls or forms, it optimises for clicks. Set up call and form tracking before you raise the budget.
Should I pay an agency to run Google Ads?
Only if the account is in your business's name, the management fee is quoted separately from the ad spend, and the report shows calls and enquiries rather than just clicks.
Ask 3 questions before you sign. Can I log in to the account myself? What exactly is the monthly fee, apart from what Google charges? What will the report count? If the answer to the last one is "impressions", that's a lot of money spent on people seeing your name. Our pricing page sets out how we scope work, and our Sea Point and Constantia pages show what that looks like for local businesses.
